Wire rope is typically constructed of several strands of steel wire, referred to as "outer strands," twisted around a center wire (see below, left). These twisted wires are then twisted around a core which consists of wire rope or fibers resulting in a very high strength unit. Many wire rope construction variations are available in the industry. A few of the most popular variations of wire rope are shown below as cross sections.
